Influence of desert dust intrusions on ground-based and satellite- derived ultraviolet irradiance in southeastern Spain

چکیده
[I] The desert dust aerosols strongly affect propagation of solar radiation through the atmosphere, reducing surface irradiance available for photochemistry and photosynthesis. This paper evaluates effects of desert dust on surface UV erythemal irradiance (UVER), as measured by a ground-based broadband UV radiometer and retrieved from the satellite Ozone Monitoring Instrument (aMI) at Granada (southern Spain) from January 2006 to December 2010. The dust effects are characteri zed by the transmittance ra tio of the measured UVER to the corresponding modeled clear sky value. The transmittance has an exponential dependency on aerosol optical depth (AOD), w ith minimum values of rvO.6 (attenuation of rv40%). The OMl UVER algorithm does not account for UV aeroso l absorption, which results in overestimation of the ground-based UVER especia lly during dust episodes with a mean relative difference up to 40% . The application of aerosol . absorption post-correction method reduces aMI bias up to "" 13%. The results highlight great effect of desert dust on the surface UV irradiance in reg ions like southern Spain, where dust intrusions from Sahara region are very frequent.

Atmospheric aerosols during the 2003 heat wave in southeastern Spain II: Microphysical columnar properties and radiative forcing
The columnar properties of atmospheric aerosol (size distributions, single scattering albedo and asymmetry parameter) are investigated based on sun/sky photometer measurements obtained during August 2003 at Granada (37.181N, 3.581W, 680m a.s.l.), southeastern Spain. Also, we compute and analyze the average aerosol radiative forcing under two different atmospheric situations that occurred during...

Extended abstract 1- Introduction A dust storm is one of the biggest serious environmental problems in the arid and semi-arid regions of the world, causing irreparable damages to farms, facilities, roads, traffic and transportation every year and respitory problems by contaminating the air. Due to the geographic location of Iran which is in the arid and semi-arid belt of the world, the count...

Dust is a natural process in the desert areas. Strong winds on the dry soil surface make the particulate matter suspended in the air near the ground. In recent years, the influence of several natural factors has led to the further spread of dust in the western and southwestern parts of Iran. A storm take placed in the Khuzestan province and the northwest of the Persian Gulf, in February 17-19, ...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Effect of Wind Speed and Soil Moisture on Horizontal Visibility Variations Caused by Dust Event in Arid Regions (Study Region: Southeast of Iran)
Introduction: Increasing or reducing the production of suspended particles depends on the important climatic and terrestrial characteristics of a region. One of the most important climatic factors affecting soil erosion is wind speed, so if the surface winds speed in a region exceeds the threshold of erosion, soil susceptibility to erosion and dust production increases. In contrast, the most im...

Dust particles consist of important aerosols and resulting in blowing strong winds on the surface of desert areas. These particles enter the atmosphere under the influence of different factors including: weather condition (wind, precipitation and temperature), land surface (topography, humidity level, roughness and vegetation), soil features (texture, density, composition and land use (agricult...
